UK Extends Seasonal Worker Visa

There is positive news for people looking for work opportunities in the UK. The UK government has recently announced an extension to the seasonal worker visa scheme until 2029. This decision aims to address the ongoing labor shortage in the food supply chain, allow businesses to plan effectively, invest in automation, and gradually reduce their reliance on migrant labor.

Reason for Visa Extension

The UK has been facing a labor shortage since Brexit, which ended the free movement of workers within the country. To tackle this issue, the government has taken several steps.

Key Announcements-

  • Increased Visa Quota: A total of 43,000 visas will be made available for the horticulture sector in 2025. Additionally, 2,000 visas will be allocated to poultry workers in the same year.

  • Investment in Technology: The government has committed to investing £50 million in technology solutions like automated packing and robotic pickers to reduce reliance on migrant labor.

Understanding the Seasonal Worker Visa

The seasonal worker visa is a temporary visa that allows foreign nationals to work in specific sectors within the UK for a limited period.

Key Details of the Visa-

  • Eligibility: To apply, you must be 18 or older and meet the following requirements:

  • Certificate of Sponsorship: You need a reference number from your UK sponsor.

  • Financial Requirements: You must have at least £1,270 to support yourself in the UK.

  • Work Sectors: The visa primarily covers the horticulture sector (fruit and vegetable picking) for up to six months and the poultry sector from October to December.

  • Duration: The visa is temporary, and holders cannot settle permanently in the UK. Dependents are not allowed on this visa.

  • Employers: Only companies with a valid temporary worker sponsor license can hire workers on this visa.
